Bittersweet Justice: New York

Occasionally, there is justice for those negatively affected by the child welfare and adoption systems. Unfortunately, it is usually bittersweet and much too late. This section will serve as REFORM Talk’s justice files.

Jacqueline Winbush was awarded $575,000 for the 1989 bashing death of her 2-year-old son, Carlos, who was in foster care. His foster mom, Linda Brisport had brought him to an all-night card game. Carlos’ battered body was found the next morning on the couch. Unbelievably, no charges were ever filed.

Right before photos of Carlos were going to be shown to the jury, the foster agency, Lakeside, agreed to the $575,000 deal during the second day of  the civil trial.
