How Could You? Hall of Shame -William Ray Green III UPDATED

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Fresno, California, foster parent William Green was arrested last Friday March 11, 2011 for molesting a girl under the age of 15. He is a substitute teacher and basketball coach. He currently does not have a child in his care and the incident is not related to either school that he is a coach and teacher at.

Update: William, age 32, “will stand trial on six felony charges of lewd acts involving a female foster child and three misdemeanor counts of molesting or annoying another female foster child.”

He stands accused of sexually assaulting “a 13-year-old girl several times inside his foster home” from January to July 2010 and kissing and rubbing “the inner thigh of a 16-year-old female foster child” in July 2010.

“The detective testified that in the 27-minute conversation, Green didn’t deny having sex with the 13-year-old, but he told the girl not to tell anyone because “his life would be over.”

When the girl told Green she thought she was pregnant, Jauregui testified that Green said “he had prayed to God that wouldn’t happen.”

William is being held in jail in lieu of a $325,000 bail and will be arraigned on April 19, 2011.

Contrary to the previous article that we cited, he did have foster children in his care. They were removed from the home when he was arrested last month.

Update 2/February 26, 2012:

William Green Arraigned on Sex Charges [ABC Local 3/16/11] states that “Green coached basketball at San Joaquin Memorial High School. He also worked as an instructional aide at Roosevelt High. ”

Fresno Substitute Teacher Pleads Not Guilty in Rape Case  [KMPH 3/16/11] states that he pled not guilty and that ” Green worked as a walk-on girls basketball coach at San Joaquin Memorial and was a substitute teacher for the Fresno Unified School District. He coached the junior varsity team for the last two seasons. ”

2nd foster daughter accuses teacher & coach of molestation [ABC 4/4/11 b yCorin Hoggard] indicates that the other accuser is a foster daughter. ”  The new charges stem from three incidents with a 16-year-old foster daughter Green only had for about a month. But the 13-year-old foster daughter who made the first claims against him may have collected the best evidence for the prosecution.

Disturbing details emerged Monday about Green, a man who made interacting with children his life’s work. Green was a foster father to as many as six children at a time and police say, there was trouble at home.

Investigators say his 13-year-old foster daughter described ten to 15 different times when they had sexual contact against her will.

“As [the 13-year-old victim] was walking up the steps to her bedroom, Mr. Green grabbed her, picked her up, and took her to the couch,” detective Jose Jauregui testified in court Monday.

Social Services took all six children away from Green and his wife after a 16-year-old foster daughter reported contact that made her uncomfortable. But Green wasn’t charged with a crime for months. When he was, it was in part because of a phone call he made to the younger girl. Police recorded the conversation and had the girl reference the illegal contact.

“Mr. Green told her not to tell anybody, that he would lose all that he’d worked for — as far as working with kids — and that his life would be over,” Jauregui said.

Green’s attorney says there’s a lack of evidence against his client, leaving nothing but a case of “He said. She said.”

“My client is accused of having multiple sexual acts and (there’s) not one single medical or physical examination,” said attorney Franz Criego.” No DNA whatsoever.”

Judge Gary Hoff decided there’s enough evidence to put Green on trial, so he’ll be back in court later this month. Meanwhile, he’s on involuntary leave without pay from Fresno Unified, pending the outcome of his trial.”

Valley Basketball Coach Moves Closer to Trial [KMJ 4/19/11] indicates that there are 9 charges and that he substituted in multiple schools. ”

William Green, 32, of Fresno, pleaded not guilty to all nine counts against him Tuesday.
Six of those counts are felonies having to do with a 13-year-old girl who was a foster child in his home.
She told authorities that Green molested her 10 to 15 times over a several-week period last year and said Green asked her not to tell anyone about it because he would lose all he had worked for and his life would be over.
Three of the charges against Green are misdemeanors involving a 16-year-old girl — also a foster child — who told authorities that Green had inappropriately touched her.
A judge has already decided there’s enough evidence to send Green to trial in June, but Green’s lawyer says the police investigation into the case has not been good enough.
Green was the junior varsity basketball coach at San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno, an instructional aide at Roosevelt High and a substitute teacher at several schools.”

His full name is William Ray Green III. In June 2011, he received an automatic suspension of teacher’s license according to this pdf.

Fresno Sheriff’s records indicate that he is case # F11901431 in Fresno Superior Court.

Fresno Superior Court February 6, 2012 indicates that his attorney is Franz Criego. He was in Hon. James Petrucelli’s court and was set for a jury trial that day. He was on the docket for February 7, 2012 as well. Other dates in that record include PLNGA 03/16/2011 PLNGA 04/04/2011 and PLNGA 04/19/2011.

Update 3: “While his wife was away, a Fresno man sexually assaulted his 13-year-old foster child inside his home over several months in 2010, a prosecutor said Wednesday in opening statements of the man’s criminal trial.

William Green, 33, a former basketball coach and substitute teacher in Fresno-area schools, is accused in Fresno County Superior Court of six felony charges of lewd acts with the 13-year-old girl and three misdemeanor counts of molesting or annoying another female foster child.

In opening statements, prosecutor Gabriel Brickey said Green would wait until his wife left the house before he sexually assaulted the 13-year-old girl. Green also kissed and rubbed the inner thigh of a 16-year-old foster child, Brickey told jurors.

A key piece of evidence, Brickey said, was a telephone call the 13-year-old made to Green.

The phone call was recorded and monitored by a police detective. In the phone conversation, Green didn’t deny having sex with the 13-year-old, but he told the girl that he loved her and told her not to tell anyone because “his life would be over,” Brickey told the jury.

Brickey said the two girls, as well as other foster children who once lived in Green’s home, will testify against him in Judge James Petrucelli’s courtroom.

Green’s attorney, Franz Criego, did not make an opening statement.

A criminal complaint accuses Green of lewd acts with the 13-year-old from January to July 2010 and molesting or annoying the 16-year-old in July 2010. The two girls didn’t tell authorities right away.

They later told a social worker and a relative, who reported it to police.

Green was arrested on March 11, 2011, a few days after police learned of the alleged molestation.

Once the allegation surfaced, Child Protective Services immediately removed the foster children from Green’s home, Brickey said.

Before his arrest, Green was a substitute teacher at several schools in the Fresno Unified School District, an instructional aide at Roosevelt High and a basketball coach at San Joaquin Memorial High School.

Police have said the alleged molestation did not happen on a school campus and did not involve any student. ”

Trial begins for Fresno man accused of molesting foster children
[The Fresno Bee 3/14/12 by Pablo Lopez]

Update 4: William Green was convicted on Wednesday March 21, 2012.

“A Fresno man who admitted in a police-recorded telephone conversation that he was in love with his 13-year-old foster child was found guilty Wednesday of having sex with the girl several times inside his home two years ago.

William Green, 33, a former basketball coach and substitute teacher in Fresno-area schools, also was found guilty of molesting or annoying another female foster child in 2010.

A jury deliberated about three hours in Fresno County Superior Court before finding Green guilty of six felony charges of lewd acts with the 13-year-old girl and three misdemeanor counts of molesting or annoying the other foster child.

Jurors also found a special allegation that Green had “substantial sexual contact” with the 13-year-old. He will have to register as a sex offender after his release.

Green sat impassively in Judge James Petrucelli’s courtroom as the verdict was read.

He faces a minimum of three years and potentially as many as 20 years in prison when he is sentenced April 19.

After the verdict, prosecutor Gabriel Brickey said it was a tough case because of the need to have underage victims testify. But the result, he said, was good.

The 13-year-old, he said, “had her day in court.”

During the trial, Brickey said Green would wait until his wife left the house before he had sex with the 13-year-old girl. Green also kissed and rubbed the inner thigh of a 16-year-old foster child, Brickey said.

A key piece of evidence, Brickey said, was a telephone call the 13-year-old made to Green. It was recorded by police.

In the phone conversation, Green didn’t deny having sex with the 13-year-old. Instead, he told the girl that he loved her and told her not to tell anyone because “his life would be over,” Brickey told the jury.
Brickey talked with jurors after the verdict and said they found the phone call “strong and compelling evidence.”

Green did not testify in the trial. But in the recorded conversation, he told the 13-year-old he was lonely and frustrated with his marriage. “We should have never went there. It should have never gotten to that point,” Green said.

But Green’s attorney, Franz Criego, said there was no physical evidence such as DNA that tied his client to the alleged sex crimes.

A criminal complaint said the lewd acts with the 13-year-old occurred from January to July 2010, and the 16-year-old was molested or annoyed in July 2010.

Child Protective Services removed the foster children from the Green home in the summer of 2010 after the 16-year-old told her social worker. But the 13-year-old kept her feelings to herself and began cutting her arm, Brickey said.

Before his arrest, Green was a substitute teacher at several schools in the Fresno Unified School District, an instructional aide at Roosevelt High and a basketball coach at San Joaquin Memorial High School. Police have said the alleged molestation did not happen on a school campus and did not involve any student. ”

Ex-coach guilty of having sex with foster daughter
[The Fresno Bee 3/21/12 by John Ellis and Pablo Lopez]

Update 5: “A Fresno man who was convicted of having sex with one of his foster children and molesting another was sentenced Thursday to 16 years in prison.

A shackled William Green, who also coached basketball and was a substitute teacher in Fresno-area schools, apologized in Fresno County Superior Court for violating a position of trust as a foster parent.

A jury last month found Green, 33, guilty of six felony charges of lewd acts with a 13-year-old girl and three misdemeanor counts of molesting or annoying a 16-year-old girl in his home two years ago.

As part of his sentence, he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, said prosecutor Gabriel Brickey.

During Thursday’s hearing, the 13-year-old, who is now 16, said Green’s crimes continue “to play over in her head.”

Because of suicidal thoughts, she said, she has missed school, isolated herself from family and friends, and constantly asks herself: “Why did this happen to me?”

Judge James Petrucelli told the victim that he “admired her courage today and throughout the process.”

The judge then scolded Green for “engaging in violent conduct — the sexual assault on a minor” in order to satisfy his sexual urges.

Although Green had no prior criminal record, the judge said the defendant deserved a long prison sentence because the crimes happened over a long period of time and Green had time to reflect on his actions.

A criminal complaint said the lewd acts with the 13-year-old occurred from January to July 2010; the 16-year-old was molested in July 2010.

Green, who is married with four children, did not testify.

Brickey told jurors that Green would wait until his wife left the house before having sex with the 13-year-old. Green also kissed and rubbed the inner thigh of the 16-year-old, Brickey said.

A key piece of evidence, Brickey said, was a telephone call the 13-year-old made to Green. It was recorded by police. In it, Green didn’t deny having sex with the 13-year-old. Instead, he told the girl that he loved her and told her not to tell anyone because “his life would be over,” Brickey told the jury.

Child Protective Services removed the two victims as well as several other foster children from the Green home in the summer of 2010 after the 16-year-old told her social worker. The 13-year-old initially kept her feelings to herself and began cutting her arm, Brickey said.

She later told a relative, who contacted police.

Before his arrest, Green was a substitute teacher at several schools in the Fresno Unified School District, an instructional aide at Roosevelt High and a basketball coach at San Joaquin Memorial High School.

Police have said the molestations did not happen on a school campus and did not involve any students. ”
