French Family Caught Smuggling Surrogate Twins Across Ukraine Border
As we discussed in Early February, international surrogacy is on the rise. Laws are far behind technology making legal immigration complicated or impossible. This article illustrates how Ukraine is becoming the hub of international surrogacy and authorities are cracking down on illegal border crossings.
French local law does not recognize surrogacy, so the 38-year old man and his father attempted to sneak into Hungary with the 2-month-old twin girls stashed in a wooden chest under a mattress in their van. (See photos at the article link below.) The man’s wife was staying in a hotel in a nearby town and was brought in for questioning.
The children were born to a surrogate in Kiev. The French man is the biological father.
“Steblyuk said the man said he wanted to sneak the children, identified as Vicky and Kim, into Europe so that he could register them as French citizens, bypassing a local law that does not recognise surrogacy.
Authorities have launched a criminal probe into illegal transportation of minors abroad. The two men, whose names have not been released, could face from three to seven years in prison if convicted.”
“France is awaiting the next judicial step and has informed the couple’s families, according to the diplomat, who was not authorised to be publicly named according to government policy.”
Thankfully, the twin girls are in good health and have been well cared for…well, except for the chest under the mattress thing…
