Opinion: Church Scandal and Adoption

Occasionally, we will link to media opinions on aspects of adoption and child welfare that you may never have thought about. This opinion touches on the topic of coercion and secrecy in the Catholic Church adoption world. He additionally mentions how unrestricted open birth records legislations are often still opposed by elements of the Catholic Church.

“At a very slow but alarming pace, birth mothers are coming forward, telling sad stories that range from simple coercion to give up their babies to physical and mental abuse by the church. When I broached this subject with my Army chaplain, he said to me, “Sadly, young unwed mothers came to the church seeking grace, but received condemnation instead.”

“The message that you were unworthy to raise your own child had a devastating effect on these women.”

Is the opposition to the open birth records legislations really “protecting the liability of the church [rather] than the needs of their devoted parishioners”?
