How Could You? Hall of Shame-Jayvid Waa-Ili case-Child Death UPDATED

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Hauula, Oahu, Hawaii, 9-month old foster child Jayvid Waa-Ili died on August 26, 2011 at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

“Sheila Deal and her husband David are trying to get information from Child Protective Services and the state Department of Human Services about what happened to their grandson, Jayvid Waa-Ili, after he was taken from a relative’s Hauula home on Aug. 10.”

“I don’t care how much it is,” Sheila Deal said. “If it’s one, it shouldn’t even be one — no matter how many children they have. It just shouldn’t happen. It just shouldn’t happen.” So far no answers have come forth, and it seems as though Child Protective Services and the state is able to dance around any inquiries. Someone (HPD) should step in and force the hand of Child Protective Services and force them to find answers.

An autopsy was performed on Jayvid, but came back inconclusive, and as of right now there are no signs of foul play. Still, there needs to be something done about this problem. What is the point of taken children out of harmful situations if they die after the fact?

The previous head of the Department of Human Services released case files in other high-profile deaths. But current Director Patricia McManaman “reinstituted long-standing departmental policy to maintain confidentiality in all child welfare cases immediately upon assuming her position” in December, then-department spokesman Joe Perez said last week. (Perez left the job Friday.)

Toxicology reports for Jayvid are due in 6-8 weeks.”

Why Do Hawaii Children Keep Dying in Foster Care?
[Beyond Honolulu 9/21/11 by Jeremy Holcombe]

“Two children died while in Hawaii’s foster care system in 2006, and another in 2008, but the grandparents of a 9-month-old Hauula boy who died last month under unexplained circumstances after he was taken by state officials say Hawaii’s fatality statistics are too high.”

February 28, 2012 UPDATE
“Infection cause of Oahu infant’s death

The medical examiner’s office says an Oahu infant in state custody died of natural causes from a common viral infection.

Nine-month-old Jayvid Waa-Ili died Aug. 26, less than three weeks after he was taken into state custody.

Autopsy results show the baby’s death was caused by respiratory failure due to complications of bronchiolitis.

Family members said they still want to know who was caring for him and why the Hauula boy ended up at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, on the other side of the island.

State Department of Human Services Director Pat McManaman said a panel will review circumstances surrounding the death.”
