Russian Adoptee Killed in Canada UPDATED
“A four-year-old Russian boy named Alex has died in Canada after being beaten to death by his adoptive mother’s boyfriend, Russian Children’s Rights Ombudsman Pavel Astakhov reported on Twitter. This is the second such case to be reported to the Russian authorities in the past few weeks. A one-and-a-half-year-old boy, Isaac Dykstra, died on August 14, 2005, three months after being adopted, Astakhov said. Russian diplomats were only recently informed of the investigation. 35-year-old Brian Dykstra was charged with the killing.”

Russian adopted child killed in Canada

Update: This possibly is the 2002 case of Sacha Vallee, possibly beaten for 4 days before he died. See the PoundPup Legacy file here. This was an adoption to Quebec. PoundPup says the following:
“4-years-old boy adopted by Marie-Claude Vallée, was beaten to death by his adoptive mother’s boyfriend, Éric Grenier. The corpse of the child was covered with 72 bruises. October 21, 2004, Grenier was found guilty of non-premeditated homicide.
Sacha was born in Russia in 1998. He had spent the first year of his life in a Siberian prison where his mother was imprisoned and where she died; the orphanage where he was transferred put him up for adoption. In August 2001, he was placed with Marie-Claude Vallée.”
Eric Grenier received a 12 year sentence.
Why is Russia just being informed NOW about all of these death cases? Surely, the US and Canada don’t expect Russian officials to find their information from PoundPup Legacy! These cases have to be proactively tracked.
What else are the diplomats in receiving countries keeping from the placing countries? This shows that there needs to be a yearly accounting of all death and abuse cases on a federal or provincial level for international adoptees and reported back to the placing country. Clearly homestudies are not ruling out people who should never have adopted.
