Maltese International Adoption Statistics

Sometimes we all need to be reminded that the US and Canada are not the only receiving countries. Many European nations are receiving countries…even one of the world’s smallest states, Malta. If you were only to listen to the US agency marketing, you may think that all countries shut down intercountry adoptions when the US and Canada shut their programs down. Some children in Cambodia have been adopted to Malta in the past few years. For statistics on Cambodian placements 2005-2009, see Hague Statistics pdf.

“Adoptions from Cambodia have risen steadily in the last two years and Ethiopia has also seen a gradual rise, but Russia continues to be the preferred country for adopting children, reaching 21 this year after a drop to 10 in 2009. The figures were presented in parliament recently.

In 2009 only one adoption from Cambodia and five from Ethiopia were recorded. In the following year, the number rose to seven from Cambodia and stayed at five for Ethiopia. This year adoptions from Cambodia continued to rise to nine by the end of November; those from Ethiopia rose slightly to seven.

Adoptions from the Russian Federation road high at 25 adoptions in 2009, then dipped sharply to ten in 2010. Bu [sic] this year the number was up again to 21 by the end of November.”
