How Could You? Hall of Shame-Kathleene Mary Schattilly UPDATED

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Frankenmuth Township, Michigan, adoptive parent Kathleene Mary Schattilly,47, “has been arraigned on charges of torture and first-degree child abuse of her two foster children.”

She “entered a not guilty plea Monday to two counts each of torture and first-degree child abuse, felonies that carry maximum penalties of life and 15 years in prison, respectively.

The Frankenmuth Police Department reported that an investigation began in May 2011 regarding child abuse allegations made by two inhabitants of a home on the 5200 block of Reimer.

After a visit to the Frankenmuth Township home to gather evidence, Frankenmuth police worked with Saginaw County Child Protective Services to remove two children from the home in mid-May, police said.

The torture charges allege that Schattilly did with intent to cause cruel or extreme physical or mental pain and suffering, inflict great bodily injury or severe mental pain or suffering upon said victim who was within her custody or physical control, her warrant states.

The child abuse charges allege that Schattilly did knowingly and intentionally cause serious physical or mental harm to said victim being a child, the warrant states.

Frankenmuth Police Detective Randy Flathau said that he was “led to believe” that the two alleged victims were Schattilly’s foster children. Flathau said Schattilly did not have any other foster children.

Further details of the alleged abuse are not being released at this time, the Frankenmuth Police Department said.

In arraigning Schattilly on Monday, Saginaw County District Judge Kyle Higgs Tarrant held her on a $100,000 or 10 percent bond. Schattilly posted the bond Monday through a bonding agency and remained free today.

She’s scheduled for a Feb. 10 preliminary hearing before Chief District Judge M. Randall Jurrens.”

REFORM Puzzle Pieces
Where was the critical thinking by social workers in her homsetudy?

Was there ongoing bodily harm that could have been caught by better monitoring and interviewing of the children?

Update:“Kathleene Schattilly is charged with first-degree child abuse and torture. Police said it was a tip from a school counselor that launched the investigation.

Frankenmuth Police Chief Donald Mawer said his main concern is the kids, ages 12 and 17. The children were not Schattilly’s biological kids, they were adopted out of foster care.
When police received a complaint they looked at it immoderately. The children were removed from the house to protect their safety.
“They were removed from the environment that we believed was dangerous hours after the initial complaint,” said Frankenmuth Police Chief Donald Mawer.
Police can’t go into details about the allegations.
“We have to remember this case is just getting started,” said Chief Mawer.
Schattilly entered a not guilty plea. She is due back in court for a prelim Feb. 10.”

Update 2: “A 47-year-old Frankenmuth Township woman has been arraigned on charges of child torture and first-degree child abuse in a Saginaw District courtroom.

The Frankenmuth Police Department said their investigation began in mid-May 2011, into allegations of child abuse which were made by two inhabitants of Kathleene Schattilly’s home.

The Frankenmuth Police Department, along with Saginaw County Child Protective Services, removed two children from the Frankenmuth Township home on Reimer Road.

REFORM Puzzle Pieces

Investigators said the children were removed after a visit to the home provided investigators with enough information to initially substantiate the removal of two minor children and further probe the matter.

The investigation was eventually turned over to the Saginaw County Prosecutors Office, who has charged Schattilly with a four-count felony warrant. Counts one and two are for torture, alleging Schattilly did with intent to cause cruel or extreme physical or mental pain and suffering, inflict great bodily injury or severe mental pain or suffering upon a victim who was within her custody or physical control.

Counts three and four are for first-degree child abuse, alleging Schattilly did knowingly and intentionally cause serious physical or mental harm to said victim being a child.

Details of the alleged abuse are not being released at this time.

  1. The women you’re talking about in this article happens to be my mom and none of the things she was accused of were true. Id also like to say that whoever wrote this needs to get their facts straight because the two kids who claimed this were NOT foster children, the were adopted many years before, as was i. They haven’t been ‘foster children” for a long time. Saying that they are foster children gives the implication that she only did these things because they weren’t her ‘real children’. My mom adopted 5 of her 7 children and never once treated any of use like we weren’t her own. She is a very loving and compassionate women. Also, maybe you should update this AGAIN to show that all charges were dropped against my mom because SHE NEVER DID ANYTHING WRONG. Check your facts Mr. Tom Plahutnik.
