DOS Roundup of Low-Placing Countries’ Suspensions

Three non-Hague countries have suspended their programs over the past few weeks.

The first is Senegal. They have suspended their program to implement the Hague regulations that went into effect on December 1, 2011. Senegal has only placed 14 children to the US from 2001 to 2011. See the DOS alert from March 6, 2012  here.

The second is Bhutan. They have suspended adoptions in order to firm up procedures. Bhutan has only placed 5 children to the US since 2007. One child’s case is pending. See the DOS alert from March 23, 2012 here.

The third is Laos. They have suspended adoptions in order to establish “appropriate regulations and procedures”. Laos has placed 39 children to the US since 2003 with 6 placed in 2011. See the DOS alert from March 30, 2012 here.
