India: Sakhee and Advait Foundation NGOs Ask Supreme Court to Suspend Intercountry Adoptions
Sakhee and Advait Foundation have demanded that the Supreme Court suspend intercountry adoptions in the absence of a legislation governing the process.
They are asking for a moratorium on adoptions until the Juvenile Justice Act can be amended to incorporate the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, 1989.
These NGOs had previously filed a petition against Preet Mandir Shelter Home which is accused of selling children. The Bombay High Court has ordered a CBI inquiry into the case.
They are calling for a detailed investigation of child procurement which includes allegations of extortion, blackmail, threat to life, inhumane conditions in various agencies and subverting and bribing government officials.
They claim that there are 5,000 domestic waiting parents yet 600-800 children are adopted abroad each year.
They additionally want a probe into country-wide trafficking.
