REFORM Talk Notice-Do Not Start a Russian Adoption

After the ruling in the Torry Hansen case, we strongly advise PAPs to NOT begin a Russian Adoption until further notice.

Some reasons are as follows:

  • Children are misrepresented as wanting a foreign family when that may not be the case.
  • Medical/social histories may be inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Adopting families are grossly underprepared for what it takes to integrate children into their families.
  • Adopting families lack resources necessary to help children overcome past trauma, both physical and mental.
  • Adoptive families do not have adequate support from agencies post adoption.
  •  If a placement turns into a nightmare for both the child and the adoptive family and the adoption annulled, the agency may sue their former clients and cash in. This is AFTER clients pay tens of thousands of dollars to adopt in the first place.
  • Agencies will go unsanctioned for their role in a failed adoption.
  • The Russian government can and will parade children around to the media for their own political purposes.
  • Random adoption advocacy groups can and will sue adoptive families in order to hold up the so-called sanctity of adoption.

In no way does this constitute a pass on sending a child to a foreign country unaccompanied. This is wrong and dangerous. It is a strong warning to those who think their agencies who are all-too-eager to place children and play up the joys and virtues of adopting children from other countries won’t do anything and everything to exert power and greed even after an adoption falls apart. The focus is on their future business, not the children, original or adoptive families.
