Adoptee Visit to India and Adoption Statistics

This article follows one of the first NonResident Indians (NRIs) to adopt from India. This Canadian couple adopted from SOFOSH in 1979. They have returned to SOFOSH 5 times and have participated in workshops to encourage (presumably domestic) adoption.

I thought that the statistics given in the article were interesting. “There have been a total of 2119 adoptions so far at SOFOSH since 1974, of which 1,012 were girls. According to officials, as many as 662 adoptions since 1974 had been by couples settled abroad, of which 480 were girls.”

So, 69% of adoptions were domestic and 52.5% of adoptions of girls were domestic. This again dispels the US adoption industry myths that Indians do not domestically adopt or adopt girls.
