Third Summary of International Adoption Disruption (Dissolution) Data

We shared our first look at data from our international adoption disruption tracking in March 2012. We had 121 cases at that point.

The second look was shared in  July 2012  . We had 156 cases at that time.

We greatly value disclosures of homestudy and placing agencies involved in the disruptions. We welcome older cases. We will continue to report this information on this blog and to anyone that shares our concerns. Information about the survey can be found at the end of this post.

The new total is 171.

The new 15 cases breakdown as follows:

China: 6

Ethiopia: 4

Unknown: 3

Guatemala: 1

Liberia: 1

Top Issues causing disruptions for this third group of cases from most frequently cited to least:

(1) Attachment

(2) Physical disabilities

(3) Behavior

(4) Child didn’t want to be adopted.

Only 3 were boys.

One child listed is in the second disruption.

The majority of new cases disrupted within the first 18 months after placement with an outlier of disruption 6 years after placement.

We thank all of you who have taken the time to complete the survey and for those that emailed us specifics. Please continue to do so as this survey will continue.

REFORM Talk’s International Adoption Disruption Survey: Read study details here . PDF survey version:REFORM Talk Disruption Survey PDF  or take Online survey:  here .You can always email us details at rallyreform@yahoo.com

The reporter of information does NOT need to be the adoptive parent who disrupted nor the adoptive parent that adopted from the disruption. We will require at minimum a traceable email address. We would prefer as much information about the case as is known. Names of children or adoptive parents will not be disclosed to anyone but the three adoptive parent owners of REFORM Talk that are collecting data. There are only a few mandatory questions so you can skip whichever questions that you are uncomfortable with answering.

For the survey, a percent progress bar is located at the top of each survey page. Know that 45% of the survey questions are for multiple disruptions only. For one disruption, the survey will go from 55% complete to finished.

  1. Here’s another (likely) disruption: The amom’s blog is called “Mom to 16” but she notes on her sidebar that she’s mom to “Mom to 15 wonderful children”.

    http://ourhaitianjourney.blogspot.ca/2012/12/a-little-update-from-road.html

(in a previous post, the amom mentioned that one of her adopted daughters had made some “embarrasing” allegations of sexual abuse against adad; the girl was taken into foster care for a time. Not sure if this is the kid that is no longer part of the family).

    • Last I read, the daughter who made the allegations was transitioning back into life with the family. CPS thoroughly investigated the claims, which were not supported by the other children in the home, and dismissed the case.

      • That’s good to hear – that it was properly investigated.

I guess the family maybe disrupted a different kid? I skimmed the past few months of posts and there’s nothing about the disruption or death of a child. So odd that Mom to 16… is now mom to 15.
