From Akute-Ifo, Nigeria, Pastor Olatayo Atunde of Light of Hope Orphanage has been ordered to stay away from the orphanage as child sexual abuse allegations are being investigated.
“The government also directed that victims of allegation of child abuse levelled against Atunde should be transferred to a government-owned care centre.
Atunde had been accused of sexually abusing the victims and other children in the orphanage, which is still undergoing registration process by the state Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.
The decision by the government followed a four and a half hours interview sessions which a panel it set up had with all parties in the case, including the victims, Atunde, his wife, representatives of the complainant, Project Alert and Mrs Peju Osoba, coordinator of Child Protection Network Committee in Ogun State.
The panel is headed by Mrs Abimbola Akeredolu, the state Attorney-General, with Mrs Elizabeth Sonubi, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Alhaji Yusuph Olaniyonu, Commissioner for Information and Strategy and Mrs Hafsat Abiola-Costello, Special Adviser to the Governor on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as members.
The panel, after meeting with all the parties, decided that it was only fair that Pastor Atunde stayed away from the orphanage, to prevent interference with investigation or obstruction of the cause of justice.
The government, however, assured that it would get to the root of the case and ensure that justice took its rightful cause.”

“The Ogun State government has said the decision to return two victims of alleged child abuse to the orphanage where the incident took place was taken in the best interest of the children who had known no other place than the Home.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Elizabeth Sonubi, in a statement issued in Abeokuta, explained that the victims of the alleged child abuse were returned to the Light of Hope Orphanage, Akute, run by Pastor Olutayo Atunde, who is currently remanded in prison for allegedly raping them, because the home is the most conducive place for them.
She said while Project Alert, a Non Governmental Organisation, which petitioned the Police over the allegation against Atunde, demanded money to accommodate the children, relatives who were invited to take them into custody out rightly rejected the offer to take up such responsibilities.
Sonubi also said “we don’t want a break in the education of the subjects. In actual fact, one of them is sitting for the on-going JSS 3 examination and we don’t want their educational circle to be broken as this could make them have cause to regret ever opening up.
“The psychological state of the children was put into consideration. The children needed to be where they would be comfortable and also be in the right psychological state of mind. The orphanage is the only home that they have ever known”, he added.
The commissioner said some of the 33 children in the orphanage whose ages range between two and 22 years, are in higher institutions of learning while others are in pre-basic class and SSS 2, adding that “as we are approaching the middle of the third term many of them will soon be sitting for promotion examinations in their respective schools”.
Noting inconsistencies in reports over the issue in a section of the media, Sonubi disclosed that medical reports did not indicate that the victims had Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) but “only show that they have infection which could have emanated from any source”.
She said logistic challenge associated with an outright closure of the Home should be appreciated in its right perspective, stating that two officials of the Ministry of Women Affairs have been detailed to constantly monitor of the orphanage since the beginning of the case as its officers visit the home every other day.
“It should be noted that before his remand in prison, the state government had ordered that Atunde should not visit the premises of the orphanage while his wife, who was allowed to take over the management, gave an undertaken not to interfere with the on-going judicial process or take action which will intimidate the children”, she stated.”
