From Droitwich, UK, former social worker Brian William O’Leary,66, “labelled a ‘sexual predator’ has been jailed for historic sex offences on a boy under 16-years-old who was in a care home at the time.
Brian William O’Leary, was sentenced to nine years in prison today (Wednesday, July 10) at Worcester Crown Court.
The 66-year-old from Oakland Avenue in Droitwich, denied four charges of indecent assault and one charge of attempted buggery on a boy under the age of 16 but was found guilty following a week-long trial.
O’Leary committed the offences over a nine month period between October 9, 1979, and June 11, 1980, while he was a social worker attending a care home on Ledwych Road, Droitwich, where his victim was staying.
The boy was placed at the home, which closed some years ago, for his own protection however he was ultimately targeted by O’Leary who was in his 30s at the time.
Det ins Andy Price, senior investigating officer welcomed the verdict and declared the 66-year-old had abused his role.
“This man was in a position of trust which he exploited to befriend a young boy on the pretext of helping him.
“Instead, he subjected him to a prolonged series of sexual assaults.
“These crimes were committed well over 30 years ago and I know the victim has suffered considerable anguish in the intervening years.
“This was a young adolescent lad who was extremely vulnerable and in need of professional care and understanding.
“O’Leary clearly saw an opportunity to take advantage.
“He was a sexual predator using the cover of his job as a social worker to commit the offences.”
DI Price praised the victim for having the courage to come forward and hoped it would encourage others who had fallen foul of sexual crimes to contact police no matter how old the offences were.
He urged people to call police on 101 and feel reassured they would be treated sensitively.
“There is no need to feel embarrassed or afraid – we can and will help.
“It is important that the perpetrators of such abhorrent crimes, whether they are current or historic, are brought to justice.
“No-one should have to suffer the kind of abuse which was inflicted by O’Leary.””
