Indian State of Nagaland Trying to Curb Adoption Trafficking

““The alarming rate of increase in trafficking cases in Nagaland has proved that there is a very thin line between illegal adoption and trafficking of children. Legal adoption will lead to systemization of procedures so that the best interest of a child, adoptive parents and the birth parents are protected,” said Renchumi Imti Programme Manager SARA.

Renchumi Imti was addressing as the resource person during the one-day sensitization programme on promoting legal adoption and training on Child Adoption Resource Information and Guidance System (CARINGS) for Specialized Adoption Agency (SAA), Children Homes, officers and staffs of SARA, SCPS and SPSU.

The programme organised by State Adoption Resource Agency organized was held at State Child Protection Society Office (SCPS), Officers Hill Kohima on August 29. This programme was organized to train the CARINGS, which provides comprehensive online information on adoptable children and prospective adoptive parents, and to sensitize the concerned authority and public on the importance of promoting legal adoption in Nagaland.

Director State Child Protection Society Office (SCPS) Khehoto Sema stressed on the fact that, where there is no legal system to bind and monitor the adoption of a child, both the prospective adoptive parents and child suffers. He also acknowledge the SAAs and children homes for their dedication and commitment and encouraged the Present Adoption Agencies to pioneer and create more SAAs in other districts too as there are only 2(two) SAA at present in Nagaland.

Kikon Director Wondong-Ki expressed gratitude to the department for the training and said that, such sensitization was much needed and long due and it will help to implement the Juvenile Laws on child protection more effectively. He spoke on the need and importance for children homes and agencies to function as per the norms and guidelines of the Act, which will help in the smooth functioning and better coordination between all parties involved in Child rights and Protection. Satahi, Programme Manager SCPS spoke on the Responsibility and Role of SAAs and Children Homes under ICPS and he gave a detailed presentation on the specific roles and responsibilities of the SAAs.

SARA is a state level-monitoring agency under the Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA) Ministry of Women and Child Development in order to promote and regulate adoption. Its mandate is to find a loving and caring home for children in need.”
