Man Charged with Fatal Beating of Foster Mother

“A 21-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder after he allegedly beat his foster mother and his actions led to her death from health issues, police said.

Joshua David Brooks of the 400 block of East 46th Street is charged with the death of Dorothy McGee, 58, at the home they shared on March 25, police said.

An autopsy conducted today determined that McGee had heart disease, suffered from diabetes and obesity but her death was caused from the stress she experienced from the altercation, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Her death was ruled a homicide.

Brooks was involved in an argument with McGee, his foster mother, at 4 p.m. Tuesday which escalated. Brooks pushed McGee to the ground and began striking her in the face, police said. Brooks fled the home and was found inside a neighbor’s apartment a short time later, police said.

McGee was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 4:56 p.m. Tuesday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Brook is charged with three counts of murder and one count of unlawful restraint, police said. He was ordered held without bail today, according to court records..”

“Judge Laura Sullivan ordered Brooks held without bond Friday, according to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office. He will next appear in court April 15.”
