How Could You? Hall of Shame- Crystal Lange/Chrissy Vaughn

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Liberty, Kentucky, foster mother Crystal Lange/Chrissy Vaughn,41, was “arrested …after store employees found two children wandering in a parking lot. The children were found at Shopko on Wolford Avenue in Liberty off US 127.”

“Shopko employees called police after finding the one year-old boy and two year-old girl alone in the parking lot.

The apartment where the children live with Lange is less than half a mile away. The two would have had to cross a busy street to get to the store.

“People they fly up and down this road constantly. They don’t watch. It’s crazy that there would be little kids wandering out like that,” said Summer Stephens, who lives near where the children were found.

Officers say they walked with the two year-old little girl for 40 minutes trying to find where the children lived before the manager at Riverdale Apartments saw Lange outside.

Lange was arrested and charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.

Those who know Lange insist she is not a negligent parent.

“From what I understand she turned her back for a second and they went out the door,” said Tonya Long, who lives next door to Lange and has known her for 20 years. She says the foster mother has devoted her life to caring for children.

The Casey County superintendent confirms Lange works as a classified employee at Walnut Hill Elementary but would not comment further on the arrest.

“To know a person like Chrissy who has a heart of gold who loves kids, gives her life to helping kids and all she wants to do is take care of kids,” said Long.

The two children are now in the custody of social services.

We tried to get Lange’s side of the story, but our request was denied.”
