Oregon Teenaged Boy Kills Foster Father and Foster Uncle-Adult Deaths UPDATED

This was a missed case from October 4, 2013.

“One of the men shot and killed by a 14-year-old boy during a deer-hunting trip in northeastern Oregon was the teenager’s foster father, authorities revealed today.

The boy, who has not been named because of his age, allegedly shot his foster father Michael Piete, 43, and Kenneth C. Gilliland, 64, at midnight on Wednesday.

A hunting rifle and a revolver were used in the incident and one of the men was shot inside their cabin while the other was shot outside, Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer said.

After the shootings, he fled the cabin but accidentally shot himself in the leg. He returned to the cabin to pleading for help, but another member of the hunting party inside tied him up with duct tape and held him at gunpoint.

While he was being watched, another man, who owns the cabin just outside the Umatilla National Forest, drove about nine miles to the town of Granite, where he woke someone who called for help.

Deputies arrived at the cabin and found the boy taped to a chair.

The teenager was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Baker City then flown with a state police trooper to St. Alphonsus Hospital in Boise

He is expected to recover from the injury, police said, but a hospital official refused to confirm he was there or give his condition.

District Attorney Ryan Joslin has not said whether the boy would be charged and officers would not say whether a motive had been established.

The group, all from Baker City, Oregon, had been on a deer hunting trip at the cabin on private property in Oregon’s Blue Mountains.

Mr Piete, who appears to have a large family in his Facebook photographs, is seen enjoying fishing, hunting and the outdoors on his social networking profile.”

“Records show a 14-year-old boy accused of shooting and killing his foster father and another man at a hunting camp in northeastern Oregon earlier this month has a history of behavioral problems, although he was never prosecuted.

The Baker City Herald reported Friday that juvenile authorities in Douglas County placed the boy in foster care with Michael and Carlotta Piete of Baker City.
Douglas County Juvenile Department Director Aric Fromdahl said the Pietes were specially trained to deal with the boy’s emotional and behavioral problems. They were known as “therapeutic” or “treatment” foster parents.
Records show the boy was referred to juvenile authorities in Douglas County on two counts of criminal mischief when he was 12, but he was not prosecuted.
The boy also was not prosecuted on juvenile counts of assault and physical harassment in Lane County in 2012, records show.
Fromdahl said he could not divulge details of the referrals due to confidentiality laws.
But in general terms, he said, assault and harassment allegations might stem, for example, from an incident at a treatment center, where the staff is trained to expect violent behavior. After examining all aspects of the situation, he said, the state might decide not to prosecute.
The boy, whose name is being withheld by The Associated Press because of his age, has been charged with two juvenile counts of aggravated murder. He is accused of killing Michael Piete and Piete’s uncle, Kenneth Gilliland, at a hunting cabin outside Granite. Authorities haven’t released a motive.
Authorities have said the shootings involved a rifle and a pistol, and one victim was shot inside the cabin and the other outside. The boy ran off and returned after accidentally shooting himself in the leg, officials said. Another member of the hunting party held him at gunpoint and taped him to a chair until deputies arrived.”

“A judge is hearing evidence on whether to try a 15-year-old boy as an adult in the slayings last October of the boy’s foster father and another man at a hunting cabin in the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon. Three weeks have been set aside starting Monday in Grant County Circuit Court in Canyon City to hear evidence in the case. The boy has been held on two juvenile counts of aggravated murder. The Associated Press has not used his name because of his age. He is accused of shooting Michael Piete of Baker City and Piete’s uncle, Kenneth Gilliland, at a hunting cabin outside Granite. Authorities haven’t described a motive. Juvenile records show the boy had a history of behavioral problems, and his foster parents had received special training.”

Update:”A defense lawyer says a 15-year-old boy who shot and killed his foster father and another man at a hunting cabin in northeastern Oregon never meant to kill anyone.

Katie Berger said Wednesday that the boy had the emotional maturity of a 9-year-old after years of abuse, foster care, and juvenile treatment, and shouldn’t have been around loaded guns.

The boy had told State Police he was fearful of wolves and accidentally shot one victim while firing at what he thought were a pair of eyes in the dark. The boy said he got scared and fired wildly into an upstairs loft, hitting his foster father.

Berger says the boy made admissions Wednesday in Grant County Court to the juvenile equivalent of manslaughter and was placed in state custody.”
