India: Baby Reunites with Mother

Finally they do the right thing!

“The district collector stopped a 15-day-old male baby from being sent to an adoption agency and reunited him with his mother here on Friday. The mother and child, who had been under the care of foundation, were reportedly separated after the woman was found to be ‘mentally unstable’.

Bharatha matha family welfare foundation, which was housing both woman and child, had reportedly decided to send the baby to a Vellore-based adoption agency after consultation with the district child protection unit (DCPU). Collector N Mathivanan, who was the chief guest at a function organised by the foundation in Thiruvarur on Friday, came to know that the child was branded ‘unknown’ even though the mother’s identity was known. On further inquiries, it was found out that the child was being sent to the society for rural development promotion services (SRDPS), a recognized adoption agency.

The collector directed the authorities to bring the mother to the venue and made her meet the child. The woman did not display any disturbing signs and breastfed the child like any normal mother. The woman spoke in an unfamiliar tongue. Collector Mathivanan asked the child to be allowed to remain with his mother. Both of them were under medical care at the Thiruvarur government medical college hospital till Sunday evening.”
