Woman Searches For Daughter

“Theresa Smith is looking for her biological daughter after giving her up for adoption 35 years ago.

According to Smith’s Facebook page, she had her daughter on January 10, 1980 at Booth Memorial Hospital in Cleveland. The baby was adopted through Catholic Services in Akron. She is asking anyone with information to contact her through Facebook.

Her Facebook post has received more than 3,200 likes and has been shared more than 82,000 times.

Smith’s Facebook page says she is from Akron and currently lives in Springdale, Washington.

In response to this story, Margaret Sabec, an adoptee and birth parent, contacted newsnet5.com to inform us about an event taking place in March that could connect Smith with her daughter.

The Ohio Adoption Records Law Opening Day Event will take place March 19-20 in Columbus. The event, hosted by Adoption Network Cleveland, is for Ohio adoptees born between 1964-1996 and will allow them to apply for their vital statistics records.

Sabec said this event will help adoptees find their birthparents. The bill allowing the records of nearly 400,000 Ohioans to be opened was put into place in December 2013. Sabec said it took more than 10 years for this to happen.

Sabec is also a member of the Ohio Birthparent Group, which holds birthparent meetings in Cincinnati and Columbus every month.
