From Cairns, Australia, “A coroner will consider whether systemic issues within the Department of Child Safety contributed to the 2012 death of an Indigenous boy in foster care in far north Queensland.

he six year old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was one of nine children under the care of foster parents in Cairns.

He was found floating face down in the family’s swimming pool and died five days later in Townsville Hospital.

An inquest starting today will also consider if the hospital took cultural values and beliefs into account when treating the boy.

The inquest is due to run until Friday.”
