She had been listed as missing since running away June 9, 2012, from a foster care placement in Wathena, in far northeastern Kansas.

Wathena Police Chief Jason Pendleton said Monday that the missing-person case was still active at the time of Hernandez-Zubia’s death. Pendleton said police had received reports that she may be in the Kansas City area but had not been able to confirm that.

According to Wyandotte County court records, Hernandez-Zubia was prosecuted in juvenile court on a drug possession case in 2012. Pendleton said his department never received notification of that case.

According to the court records, she failed to appear for sentencing in the drug case. A warrant for her arrest had been active since August 2012.

Police said Monday they were searching for a white pickup truck that may have a bullet hole in its tailgate in connection with the killing. The truck is believed to be a late-1990s or early-2000s Ford F-150 with flare sides, tinted windows, 20-inch chrome rims and a “touch screen” device in the cab.
