How Could You? Hall of Shame-Markie Moon

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Atlanta, Georgia, “a 6-year-old Atlanta boy was returned to his home on Wednesday hours after being treated for a stab wound to the face that police believe was caused by either a foster parent or relative, who was taken into custody.

Markie Moon, 45, was charged with aggravated assault and cruelty to children. She was taken to the Fulton County jail. Police did not immediately know Moon’s relationship to the boy, but Lt. Celeste Murphy said two possibilities were foster parent or relative with custody.

One thing was clear, however, Murphy said: “It wasn’t an accident. She said she was disciplining the child … and she poked him.”

A school bus driver noticed the child’s facial wound and asked him what happened, Murphy said. The driver reported the injury to officials at Heritage Academy in southeast Atlanta, and they contacted police.

The boy received a relatively large gash by his eye, but it was non-life threatening, Murphy said. The child was treated at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding.

State social workers on Wednesday returned the boy to the home where he lived on Waters Road with Moon’s husband, adult son and adult daughter. They were not charged in the case, Officer Kim Jones said.

Moon did not explain in detail how the stabbing happened or what instrument was used, Murphy said.

Police recovered a knife and a fork from the home on Waters Road, Murphy said.”

“The guardian of a 6-year-old waived her first court appearance on Thursday after the 6-year-old to whom she was guardian was allegedly stabbed in the face.

The 6-year-old child was hospitalized and then returned home Wednesday morning after Atlanta Police said he showed up for class at Heritage Academy Elementary School in Atlanta with wounds on his face.

School officials called police and it was then determined that the child’s guardian was responsible.

Markie Moon was arrested and waived her first court appearance on Thursday. She is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery and cruelty to children.

Atlanta Police said she is a legal guardian to the child, clarifying an earlier comment on their relationship.

Investigators said the child boarded the school bus Wednesday morning with a deep wound on his face, under his left eye. The injury was so severe, the school bus driver noticed it right away as the child was getting onto the bus.

The child was taken to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding where stitches were applied to the wound.

Police were called and they went straight to the woman’s house. They said she didn’t deny anything.

“She just said she was disciplining the child. She did not admit to stabbing the child or anything like that. She said she just poked him,” said APD Lieutenant Celeste Murphy. “It was a utensil, we’re just not sure if it was a fork or a knife. The child is six years old so all we could get out of him is that he was being disciplined.”

After the child left the hospital, he was returned home.

The Division of Family and Children Services told us they cannot comment on if they are involved in the case.

Atlanta police are investigating the incident.”
