How Could You? Hall of Shame-Anna-Lise Rainey case-Child Death
This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.
From Columbia, Tennessee, foster child Anna-Lise Rainey, 1 years old, “died in a Middle Tennessee foster home last week, and her family still has lots of questions.”
“Anna-Lise Rainey was born to a teen mother at Magnolia Academy, a troubled DCS group home that Channel 4 has reported on in the past.
The baby’s 14-year-old father and grandmother were in a custody battle with the state to keep Anna at home with them for good. Instead, she will be buried on Thursday.
“I told them this whole year that Anna was going to die in foster care,” said Ivy Lee Beard, the child’s grandmother.
Beard said DCS is to blame for baby Anna’s death.
“It’s their fault,” she said.
But it’s unclear who, if anyone is at fault.
“We’re waiting on an autopsy,” Maury County Sheriff Bucky Rowland said.
The Maury County Sheriff’s Department found no evidence of neglect or abuse at the foster home. The baby had just been released from the hospital on the day of her death. She had a history of heart problems.
“The foster mother put her to bed at 9 that night, checked on her at 1 a.m., checked on her again at 6 a.m., and at 7:15, noticed her lips were blue,” Rowland said.
Beard said she and her son were never told the child was hospitalized or that DCS had released her to a new foster home.
“I’d like to know if this foster home was trained to care for a medically needy child,” Beard said.
DCS said that question will be part of its investigation.
The foster mother told Channel 4 she was familiar with Anna’s medical history. She was at the hospital when the baby was discharged and appeared very emotional about the baby’s death.”
