From Mumbai, India, “three days after the adopted son of a senior professor at IIT-Bombay allegedly stabbed himself using a kitchen knife inside their staff quarters, Powai police have ruled out foul play. The post-mortem report confirmed that the 20-year-old boy died of self-inflicted injuries, said officers.

Chaitanya Varekar, according to his parents and sister, had stabbed himself in a fit of rage over an argument at home. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to injuries.

According to police, the incident took place on Friday afternoon, when Chaitanya, who was pursuing a Bachelors degree in Science from a city college, got irritated over “some sudden quarrel with the family”. Powai police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) in the matter.

Bhai Madheshwar, senior inspector, Powai police station, said, “We had recorded the statements of his parents and sister who updated us about the sequence of events.”
