How Could You? Hall of Shame-Gary Durham

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Monroe, Georgia, former foster parent Gary Durham “who once won the lottery was convicted of two sex crimes last week.

A Walton County jury convicted Gary Durham of rape against one victim and child molestation against a separate person, according to the Alcovy Circuit district attorney’s office.

Assistant District Attorney Randy McGinley tried the case, with the assistance of victim services director Kim Roberts and Chief Investigator Josh Chambers.

The Monroe Police Department started investigating in 2007 after the Department of Family and Children Services filed a report about a possible rape involving Durham and a 16-year-old girl he knew.

Investigators said at the time they suspected multiple instances of sex but could not collect enough evidence to file charges.

Then, in the fall of 2009, DFCS took action on charges Durham touched a girl four years earlier, when she was 11. On at least one occasion, the alleged activity took place in a county park after hours with no other employees around.

Durham and his wife are former foster parents.

Durham went to work for the Walton County government in 1998 as a solid waste disposal site attendant and moved to the parks and recreation department in 2004. His employment was terminated Dec. 11, 2009, two days after his arrest.

Durham won $1 million in a Georgia Lottery game in 2007.”
