How Could You? Hall of Shame-India-Dhinesh case-Child Death

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Pudukkottai,India, “A 30-year-old woman was arrested on Monday for clubbing her two-year-old adopted son to death at Mookkudi village near Aranthangi in Pudukkottai district. M Kala was infuriated that the child defecated in the living room of their house and thrashed him on Saturday leading to his death.

The child’s body was was exhumed and post-mortem performed at Pattukottai in Thanjavur district on Monday.

Kala had two daughters who were staying with her parents. Her husband was working abroad. On Saturday, she went to the ration shop in the village leaving behind the child, Dhinesh, inside her locked house.

When she returned, she found the child defecating in the hall. This angered Kala who picked up a wooden stick and beat the boy on the back. The child collapsed and died. Kala took him to the Aranthangi hospital, but he could not be revived. She told neighbours that the boy had fallen ill.

Kala hired a private hearse service vehicle and took the body to the farmland of her father at Anaikkadu near Pattukkottai in Thanjavur district. The police said she lied to her relatives that the child died of some health problems and buried the body in the farm on Saturday night.

On returning to her house at Aranthangi, Kala gave contridictory [sic] versions about the health condition of the child, which made neighbours suspicious. They informed the police of the developments and they questioned her on Sunday. Kala confessed that she had killed the child.

The incident also brought to light an illegal adoption racket. Dhinesh was born to an inter-caste couple at Anaikkadu last year. After the couple were separated and the woman was married to another man, her family handed over the boy to Kala who had been yearning for a son.

“It was an illegal adoption. We found that Kala did not intend to murder the boy. Yet we filed a case of murder. She admitted that she should pay for her mistake,” said sub-inspector of Aranthangi police Gopinath.

Kala was booked under 302 and 201 of the IPC for murdering and causing disappearance of evidence respectively.

Subsequently, the police exhumed the body and a team of doctors from the Pattukkottai government hospital performed the post-mortem on Monday. The body was handed over to the maternal family of the boy at Anaikkadu.”
