How Could You? Hall of Shame-Long Creek Youth Development Center-Child Death

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From South Portland, Maine, “the death of a juvenile resident at Long Creek Youth Development Center has been reported to the state medical examiner’s office for review but state officials are releasing no additional details.

It’s not clear when the resident died.

On Oct. 29, Maine Department of Corrections Commissioner Joseph Fitzpatrick sent a two-sentence news release saying that a “resident was involved in an incident earlier today. All appropriate action is being taken to deal with the situation. No other information will be released at this time.”

On Friday, Timothy Feeley, a spokesman for the Maine Attorney General’s Office, confirmed that the Office of State Medical Examiner has been asked to “determine time, date, place, cause, manner and circumstances of the death.”

“Because the individual was a juvenile and because of statutory provisions protecting the identity of such individuals, we cannot comment further at this time,” Feeley said.

Law enforcement officials in South Portland, where Long Creek is located, have declined to comment this week on their involvement in any incident.

Long Creek is one of two juvenile detention centers managed by the Department of Corrections. The other is in Charleston.”
