Former Owner of Utah’s The Adoption Center of Choice, Inc. Charged With Tax Evasion
“The former owner of a state adoption agency was charged Monday [December 5, 2016] with multiple counts of tax evasion.
James Charles Webb was the owner of The Adoption Center of Choice, Inc., an American Fork-based adoption agency.
Charging documents state Webb, 59, “willfully evaded payment of required withholding tax” in the 2011 and 2012 tax years.
Webb reportedly kept the taxes that were taken out of his employees’ paychecks instead of paying the government.
Charging documents do not list the value of the taxes improperly paid. Both charges of tax violation are second-degree felonies.
Webb was also charged in February for similar crimes, though that case is pending. Court records from that case state Webb evaded paying more than $33,000 in taxes.
Webb and the Adoption Center of Choice were also reportedly in violation of “numerous procedures and how it dealt with clients,” and a moratorium was placed on the agency accepting new clients in October 2013, charging documents state.
Despite that, Webb had several clients wire tens of thousands of dollars to his agency after October 2013 without their knowing of the moratorium.
Four separate individuals lost a total of about $70,000 when the Adoption Center of Choice was forcibly shut down. Adoptions reportedly never occurred for those four individuals.”
