FacePalm Friday
Welcome to this week’s edition of FacePalm Friday.
This is where your hosts will list their top picks for this week’s FacePalm moment—something they learned or read about this week that caused the FacePalm to happen (you know, the expression of embarrassment, frustration, disbelief, shock, disgust or mixed humor as depicted in our Rally FacePalm smiley).
We invite you to add your FacePalm of the week to our comments. Go ahead and add a link, tell a personal story, or share something that triggered the FacePalm on the subject of child welfare or adoption.
Your Host’s Selection:
Madonna Adopts Twins From Malawi
It is sad that I already have a Madonna tag.
I really cannot believe that a 58-year-old woman was able to adopt twins from Malawi. Of course Malawi is NOT a country that follows Hague Convention on Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption.
US DOS states “The Malawi Adoption of Children Act of 1949 does not address intercountry adoptions and courts have wide discretion on how they handle adoptions. Although a May 9, 2009, Malawi Supreme Court decision gave courts more leeway in granting adoptions for foreign adoptive parents, the decision has not resulted in a permanent change to the country’s intercountry adoption laws or regulations. The courts in Malawi assess each case individually, taking into consideration the circumstances of the prospective adoptive child. The May 9, 2009, Supreme Court decision did, however, set aside the requirement that prospective adoptive parents live in Malawi and foster a child for a period between 18 and 24 months before an adoption is granted.”
This Daily Mail article says “The 58-year-old, who publicly threatened to blow up the White House and used the F-word last month to describe her horror at President Trump’s election, toned down her usual rhetoric when trying to adopt Stella and Esther.[Great names! NOT!]
She insisted she was against using foul language when bringing up children, took religion seriously and had carried out extensive research on twins before trying to bring them into her family, a court source said.”
“Her remark about blowing up the House led to calls for the anti Trump singer to be investigated by the Secret Service as a death threat.“
Also,”The court source said Judge Mwale had approved the adoption after Madonna proved she had a clear vision for parenting.” A Clear Vision…
Really?Really? How about your son Rocco who now resides with his father Guy Ritchie?
“In addition, Judge Mwale look at whether Madonna had used her considerable fortune in the adoption process by offering money to the twins’ father and maternal uncle.”
“The girls were left with their grandmother who did not have the means to care for the girls as well as their five other siblings aged from eight to 20.”
So they have a grandmother, father and a maternal uncle? Why doesn’t she just give them some money so that THEY can take care of the twins?
Once again, $$$$$$$$ can buy anything. Buy off the judge. Buy these children. Buy the rulebook so it can be broken. So disheartening.
