How Could You? Hall of Shame-Daniel Pye UPDATED

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Miami, Florida, “U.S. authorities have charged an Arkansas man with sexually abusing children while working as a missionary in Haiti.

Daniel Pye became well-known among missionaries in Haiti as he helped coordinate relief efforts in Jacmel after the January 2010 earthquake. He was jailed for about five months in Haiti in 2011 amid a dispute with members of his U.S.-based mission over property belonging to their home for children.

Following a two-year investigation, federal prosecutors in Miami have charged Pye with four counts of traveling from South Florida to Haiti to engage in sexual conduct with children.

Pye was arrested Tuesday in Arkansas, where he lives with his wife and was working as a counselor at a behavioral center for children, according to court documents.

A judge in Texarkana, Arkansas, ruled that Pye, who has no criminal history, could be released on $5,000 bond after surrendering his passport. But a prosecutor in Miami filed a motion Thursday to have that order reversed, noting that the former missionary faced up to 30 years in prison on each count and had previously attempted to commit suicide.

The judge ordered responses to the motion by March 16, effectively keeping him in custody for now. Pye is expected to be transferred to Florida to be arraigned on the charges.

A public defender appointed to represent him in Arkansas did not respond to a telephone message seeking comment.

The investigation began in April 2015 with a call to a Homeland Security Investigations tip line alleging that Pye had sexually abused female minors at a home for children in Haiti from 2008 to 2012, according to the court documents.”

“The wife of an American pastor is speaking out as her husband is being held in a Haitian prison for the last five months and counting. Reportedly, Daniel Pye has suffered sexual abuse, and overcome both malaria and cholera during his imprisonment. Leanne Pye, who is nine months pregnant, spoke to Bill about the living conditions in which her husband is living, saying, “I have no hope of getting him out anytime soon.”

Daniel Pye, 35, ran the orphanage where he fed and cared for 22 children. This week he was arrested and hit with federal charges of sexually abusing some of the minors he was charged to protect.

Pye volunteered at Haitian orphanages for years with his wife before they started their own in Jacmel according to the Miami Herald. In Haiti, missionary orphanages house, care for, feed and educate orphans as well as underprivileged children with living parents.

Pye has been imprisoned before. In 2011, he was held in a Haitian jail cell for five months — at first on no charges and then for possessing “illegal documents”.

According to the Herald, his lawyers, missionary friends, Haitian senators, the Haitian Ministry of Justice and the U.S. Embassy worked together to free him.

Pye’s arrest is the latest of a series of crackdowns on pedophilia rings, under U.S. President Donald Trump’s justice department. Daniel Pye is scheduled to make his first appearance in court to determine who his lawyer will be. Read details on the federal complaint against Pye.”

“in a federal criminal complaint, prosecutors accused Pye of molesting three of the girls in his care. One was 6 years old at the time. Her mother was fired from her job at the orphanage after she confronted Pye, according to the complaint, although he continued to pay her.Facebook smileys

The complaint lists four victims, with most of the abuse centered on the then-6-year-old, who spoke with investigators in 2015.

“She said PYE had sexually abused her every day, whether his wife was home or not, beginning in 2008, when she was approximately six (6) years old, and ending … in 2011,” according to the complaint.

An unnamed witness told authorities she shared a room with Pye at a religious conference in Kentucky, and he told her he “had an inappropriate relationship with one of the kids” at the orphanage. When she pressed him weeks later, he said he regretted trusting her, according to the complaint.

A second victim, who was 9 at the time of the abuse, told authorities she saw Pye molesting the first girl and having sex with another victim, who was around 12 or 14 years old at the time. She said Pye would touch her inappropriately while they were swimming.

Investigators used flight records and the posts on Pye’s Facebook account to confirm his travel dates to and from Haiti.”

REFORM Puzzle Piece

Update: “An Arkansas man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for sexually abusing children while working as a missionary in Haiti.

A U.S. Department of Justice news release says 36-year-old Daniel Pye was sentenced Wednesday. He was convicted in November of three counts of traveling in foreign commerce with the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual conduct with a minor.

Pye operated an orphanage in Jacmel, Haiti, from 2006 to 2012. He became well-known among missionaries and helped coordinate relief efforts after the 2010 earthquake. Authorities say Pye regularly abused female residents of his orphanage, including girls as young as 6.

Pye was jailed for about five months in Haiti in 2011 amid a dispute with members of his U.S.-based mission over property belonging to their home for children.”
