Adoptee Kills Adoptive Father So He Can Get a Cell Next to his Biological Father in Prison UPDATED
“The family of a man who died earlier this week in a fire that investigators believe was arson is remembering the victim as a hero.
Jason Doan, 45, died Friday from injuries he suffered during the blaze Thursday night on the northwest side.
“In my eyes and everyone eyes, Jason is a hero,” his cousin, Lindsey Lawrence, said. “I wish I that I could have another chance just to say that to him.”
Lawrence said when the fire started Doan was in his home with his husband and two of his three adopted children.
As the blaze grew, Lawrence said Doan broke a window and lifted his husband and two children, 11-months old and 10 years old, out to safety. Doan wasn’t able to make it out himself.
“I don’t know what else you would call a hero,” Lawrence said. “If there’s a definition for hero his name should be next to it.”
Doan died Friday and later that day, police arrested a 16-year-old for murder, arson and auto theft in the case.
Lawrence said that boy is Doan’s other adopted child.
“I’m mind blown. I don’t even know what to say,” she said. “He was trying to help him so he had a shot at life.”
Police have yet to say whether Doan and the 16-year-old are related, citing the ongoing investigation.
There is a GoFundMe page set up to raise money for Doan’s funeral arrangements and family. ”

“The 16-year-old adopted son of a man killed in a house fire last week has been charged as an adult with murder, arson and auto theft, court records show.
Jordan Marin-Doan, 16, was arrested on Saturday in connection to the fire in the …that killed his adopted father, 45-year-old Jason Doan, last Thursday.
Doan’s husband, Alan Marin, and their two other adopted children were able to escape the home safely.
Marin told police he and his husband woke up to find a fire blocking their exit. Doan helped Marin and two of their children escape through an upstairs window, before succumbing to the flames and smoke inhalation.
“He saved me and my kids,” Marin said. “He gave his life for us, making sure we were OK. He got me out with my kids and told me to take them to a safe place. That was his priority — our kids — making sure they were safe.”
After escaping the house, Marin realized his adopted son, Marin-Doan, was missing along with the family’s Jeep.
Marin-Doan was taken into custody in Adams County two days after the fire.
On Tuesday, Marin-Doan was waived to adult court, court records show.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed in the case, fire investigators determined a fuel commonly used in weed eaters had been poured on the carpet of a stairwell in the house.
Following his arrest, Marin-Doan reportedly admitted to police that he poured the fuel out in the house and then lit it with a lighter.
Marin told police that Marin-Doan had been threatening to kill everyone in the house. According to the affidavit, the most recent threat was made on Oct. 28 – less than a week before the fire.
Marin-Doan allegedly wanted to kill his adopted parents so “he could get a cell next to his biological father in prison.”
Police said Marin-Doan was not mad at the time of his arrest and said he did not know why he started the fire. He also allegedly told police he’d started another fire in the past at a different location.
As of Tuesday evening, an initial hearing for Marin-Doan in adult court had not yet been set.”

Update:“An Indianapolis teen who set fire to his family’s home, killing one of his adoptive fathers, has been sentenced to a total of 32 years in prison.
Jordan Marin-Doan was sentenced Wednesday after pleading guilty to arson resulting in serious bodily injury, voluntary manslaughter, and auto theft.
According to court documents, Jordan started the fire while his two adoptive fathers and two young siblings slept last November. The then-16-year-old told police that he poured gasoline on the stairs and used a lighter to ignite it, then ran as the fire spread.
As the blaze grew, family says one of fathers, Jason Doan, broke a window and lifted his husband and two children out to safety. Sadly, Jason wasn’t able to make it out himself.
Jordan was later taken into custody, originally charged with murder.
The Doan family told police Jordan had threatened to kill everyone in the home several times before that night. According to the court documents, he told officers he wanted to get a cell next to his biological dad in prison.
FOX59 sat down with the Doan family after the fire. They said Jason sacrificed his own life to save theirs. Had he survived, they believe that he would forgive his adopted son.
“That is how big his heart is. He could forgive him and take him back into his home and continue raising him,” said Jason’s cousin, Lindsey Lawrence.”
