From Colorado, Michigan adoptive parents Thomas and Christina Toth, both 48, “were traveling with their adopted daughters, 11-year-old Sophia and eight-year-old Elianna, shortly before 12am when the horrific crash occurred. ”
“A family-of-four was killed early Saturday morning during their Colorado vacation when their van collided with a tractor-trailer.
Colorado State Patrol said the first call about the crash came in around 12.10am
According to authorities, there was a jack-knifed semi on Interstate 76 about five miles from Sterling.
The trailer was blocking the entire eastbound lane on the highway.
Police said the family’s Chrysler Pacifica sport wagon collided with the trailer of the semi and went under it, killing the Toth family, according to KDVR.
The driver of the semi was later identified as Abdihakim Mohamed, 46, from Georgia.
Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol as factors in this crash.
Friday’s storm in eastern Colorado left driving conditions dangerous for travelers with low visibility and black ice.
Authorities said the weather could’ve been a factor in the crash.
Thomas Toth, of Michigan, was a packaging engineer for Chrysler and his wife, Christina, was a successful lawyer who had just partnered with a longtime friend to start their own firm, according to The Detroit News.
Friends and family members have been left heartbroken over the devastating loss of the Toth family.
‘They loved each other so much. They loved their girls and went to such great efforts to have them. Tom inspired me as a parent to balance my love for music, for that of my step son,’ family friend Michael Steinberg wrote in a heartfelt Facebook tribute to the Toth family.
‘His loss to me, hits hard. His loss to their families and day to day relations even harder,’ Steinberg added.
Jim Surowiec, who worked with Christina Toth at the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office and during her time as a corporation counsel for the county, said Christina ‘was like a sister, not only to me, but to like everyone’.
‘She was smart, unassuming. And such a talented lawyer. She was so gracious and so effective without having to be condescending. Everybody loved her,’ Surowiec told the Detroit News. ”
