Fifteen Idaho Children Injured or Abused in Foster Care

“A CBS2 investigation into Idaho’s foster care system finds 15 children were injured or abused while in foster care in 2022.

Data obtained by CBS2 shows 21 children were injured or abuse in 2019, 19 in 2020, and 29 in 2021. These are cases reported directly to the state.

Idaho Department of Health and Welfare Child Welfare Bureau Chief Andie Blackwood says these cases involve the treatment the child received in the foster home, not accidental injuries.

She says when a tip is received about a child being abused in a foster home, an investigation takes place. Child Welfare workers also make decisions about the status of the foster parent’s license.

Blackwood says this abuse adds to the trauma a child in foster care is already experiencing.”
