How Could You? Hall of Shame-South Africa-Four Men and Women

From Pretoria, South Africa, the Pretoria North Magistrates Court has handed down multiple sentences to four men and women in a harrowing child abuse case.

Two others, meanwhile, have been given suspended sentences.

The group was arrested in 2010 on allegations of abusing four of their own biological children as well as two foster children, and of running a child porn ring.

After multiple delays in the case, they were finally convicted in May last year, and appeared in the dock on Thursday for sentencing.

The group was found guilty of a total of more than a dozen counts, including rape, sexual assault, compelled rape, compelled sexual assault, child abuse, and child neglect.

In sentencing, Magistrate Pieter Nel highlighted the prevalence of these types of crimes as well as the seriousness thereof.

He also found that none among the group have shown any remorse.

The defence indicated that they planned on lodging an appeal.

An application for bail pending the outcome thereof has, however, been dismissed.

The abuse came to the fore after one of the victims, who was just 6 years old at the time, confided in an educational psychologist, who in turn notified the police.

During the investigation, it emerged the abuse had been ongoing for five years.”
