Spain: Two Russian Adoptive Boys Kill Adoptive Mother

“TWO adopted Russian boys are being held in northern Spain after their mum was found dead and “gagged with a bag over her head” on the back seat of her car.

Police are treating the death of the woman, identified as Silvia Lopez Gayubas, 48, as a murder that the youngsters allegedly tried to disguise as an attempted kidnap.

The victim’s older adopted child, a 15-year-old boy, has been arrested and is expected to appear at a youth court in the coming hours, a regional spokesperson confirmed this morning.

The younger boy, a 13-year-old who is below the age of criminal responsibility in Spain and cannot be prosecuted, was not formally arrested but has now been admitted to a children’s home.

The youngsters were held in a park in Castro Urdiales, a half-hour drive from the port city of Santander around 2.15am this morning.

Around five hours earlier cops had started hunting for them after finding their mum’s body in a car in a garage near the family home.

She is believed to have been killed in the vehicle after suffering a stab wound to the neck as well as injuries caused by violent blows.

Initial reports said her body had been discovered in the boot of her car, but local media subsequently reported she was in the back seat, had been gagged and had a rubbish bag placed over her head.

The local reports also said the boys’ gran had called 999 after the youngsters phoned her last night to say they were being “kidnapped”.

Investigators are understood to be attempting to confirm their suspicions the boys made up the abduction before disconnecting their mobiles.

According to local reports, the boys were adopted by their deeply religious mum and are originally from an Eastern European country said to be Russia.

Police spokesperson Martinez Ros said: “We want to express our most sincere condolences to the victim’s family and friends at this terrible time for them.

“The loss of a person in these circumstances is a devastating blow for the community.

“Yesterday afternoon around 8.45pm in Castro Urdiales the Civil Guard confirmed a 48-year-old woman had died.”

She added: “The investigation carried out so far points to the apparent involvement of the children of the woman who has died.

“They were located around 2.15am this morning in the same town of Castro Urdiales.

“One, a youngster aged 15, was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the victim’s death and the other, a youngster aged 13, was formally identified.

“This incident confronts us with the harsh reality of the implication of children in acts of extreme seriousness.

“The Civil Guard investigators are fully focused on establishing all the circumstances revolving around this case.

“At the moment our thoughts are with the family of the victim and the youngsters involved who whatever occurred need support and orientation to face up to what they have allegedly done.

“The 13-year-old has been taken to a child protection centre, in line with the indications of state prosecutors.

“The older boy is with youth prosecutors so they can determine what action to take next.”

Castro Urdiales mayoress Susana Herran said this morning: “Our feeling is one of absolute sadness. It’s awful that things like this happen.”

She also revealed the boys’ father was working in the Basque country when the alleged homicide occurred.”
