How Could You? Hall of Shame-John Edward “Ian” Martin

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Springfield, Missouri, John Edward ‘Ian” Martin, 53, ” faced 17 felony charges for incidents, including five counts of sexual misconduct involving a child under 15 for alleged abuse of his foster son in 2020, nine counts of second-degree statutory sodomy for abusing his foster-turned-adopted son in 2009, and three counts of first-degree statutory sodomy for alleged abuse of a child in Martin’s Boy Scout troop in 1997.”

“After hearing three young men testify John Edward “Ian” Martin sexually abused them, a jury of six men and six womenfound Martin guilty of abusing one of those young men.

That doesn’t mean most of those jurors didn’t believe theother two Martin accusers during his trial in Springfield June 24-27.

“I wanted every single count to be guilty. Every single one,” juror Melissa Britton said. “I will pray (for Martin’s other accusers) until the day I die. I’m sorry they got violated all over again on the stand. That’s terrible that they have to be treated that way for something they didn’t ask to happen to them.””

“The jury found him not guilty on the sexual misconduct and first-degree statutory sodomy charges, but found him guilty of nine counts of second-degree statutory sodomy for abusing the boy in 2009-2010.

Britton was among about eight jurors who exited the Greene County courthouse together Thursday evening after more than seven hours of deliberation.

The group of jurors appeared upset, but in agreement: they believed Martin sexually abused all three of the boys and that Martin should have been found guilty on all 17 charges. “
