From Riverside, California, adoptive parents Alejandra Marin ,51, and Juan Sanchez Moreno,59, “were arrested and charged with murder, torture and child abuse after [a 10 -year-old adopted son] died at a local hospital on Thursday, Nov. 21, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

The child, whose identity is not being released, was initially found in “medical distress” by deputies at a residence in Moreno Valley earlier in the day.

An initial investigation into the boy’s death “revealed signs of possible neglect and abuse.” Following this discovery, the Riverside Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit was called in to join the investigation, the release said.

“Through the joint investigation between the Central Homicide Unit and Special Victims Unit, the juvenile’s adopted parents, Alejandra Marin and Juan Sanchez Moreno, both residents of Moreno Valley, were arrested for murder, torture, and child abuse,” authorities said.

Marin was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center with no bail set, according to inmate search records seen by PEOPLE. She is set to appear in court on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Moreno’s booking and court details, meanwhile, have not been made available. The investigation remains ongoing. “
