Foster Care Movie: Short Term 12

“The shining star at this years’ South by Southwest was made by a former San Diego student. Destin Daniel Cretton (a Hawaii native) studied at Point Loma Nazarene and San Diego State before breaking into the film business. Cretton created a short film in 2009 about his post-college experience working at a foster care facility for at-risk teens. The short quickly garnered attention — and a slew of awards. The recently released, full length adaptation has a meaty script, batch of mostly unknown actors, and plenty of praise. “Short Term 12” is being dubbed one of 2013’s best films.

Brie Larson (“The Spectacular Now,” “21 Jump Street,”) stars in the feature film version. She plays Grace, a twenty-something foster care supervisor. The film follows her as she struggles to help new intakes at the facility with her longtime boyfriend and co-worker, played by John Gallagher Jr. (“The Newsroom”). The indie-film-that-could will be officially released in theaters August 23, 2013. ”
