Man Meets Biological Family

“A man reunited with his family in Chile for the first time since he was kidnapped as a baby.

Just after giving birth to her son, María Angélica González was told by a nurse the newborn needed to be put in an incubator because he was premature. The nurse then told González that the baby was dead.

In reality, the baby had been stolen and was adopted by parents, who had no idea their son was kidnapped and raised in Arlington, Virginia.

For 42 years, Jimmy Lippert Thyden believed he had no living relatives in Chile but in April of this year, he decided to try and find out if that was really the case. Within a few weeks, he discovered that his mother and siblings were still alive.

Thyden headed to Valdivia, Chile last week and reunited with his mom for the first time since birth. González told USA Today that seeing her son again was “a miracle from God.”

While Thyden was overjoyed to see his mother, he also acknowledged the pain of realizing how much he didn’t experience because he had been taken as a baby.

“I am happy for the moments we’re getting right now, but I lament the loss of 42 years of time with my family, with my siblings, with her,” he said. “It’s the frustration of losing my culture and the frustration of losing so much time, to not have the built memories together, to not have the experiences of a shared lifetime.””
