How Could You? Hall of Shame-Ryan Patania

This will be an archive of heinous actions by those involved in child welfare, foster care and adoption. We forewarn you that these are deeply disturbing stories that may involve sex abuse, murder, kidnapping and other horrendous actions.

From Star, Idaho, Ryan Patania, “was closely involved with foster children and youth at local churches was arrested Monday on multiple felony warrants, including two counts of sexual battery on a minor child.

Ryan Patania, 34, was arrested after 5 p.m. in the … of North Highbrook Way in Star by Ada County Sheriff’s Office deputies, Star police and Ada County SWAT on felony warrants for sexual battery on a minor age 16 to 17, injury to a child, aggravated assault, and use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony, according to a news release from the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.

Detectives also searched Patania’s residence and, during the investigation, learned that Patania “has made statements that there may be other juveniles he had inappropriate contact with locally,” the release said.

Anyone with additional information about Patania is asked to contact Star Police Detective Turner at 208-377-6790.

Ryan “was sentenced Wednesday [November 12, 2025] to serve up to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple counts of possessing or accessing child sexually exploitative material (CSAM).

Ryan Patania, 35, must serve at least 30 years, plus up to an additional 10 years, for the felony crimes, Ada County District Judge Jason Scott ruled, according to a news release from the Ada County Prosecutor’s Office.

Additionally, Patania was ordered to have no contact with the victims for 40 years and to register as a sex offender.

Patania was charged in early January with 16 felonies — including 15 counts of possessing or accessing CSAM, plus one count of lewd conduct with a minor child under 16 — and initially pleaded not guilty to all charges. In August he changed his plea on four of the counts to guilty and the rest were dismissed as part of a plea agreement, according to online court records.

The case began in December 2024 when detectives investigated Patania for making sexual comments and touching a child in a sexual manner, the prosecutor’s office’s release states. Patania was arrested, and a search warrant granted the Ada County Sheriff’s Office permission to search his phone.

The release adds that deputies discovered numerous images of child pornography, primarily depicting young boys between the ages of 5 and 10. Deputies also found numerous chats and text messages in which Patania discussed his interest in child pornography, often joking about it.

“This case represents the darkest kind of predatory behavior that abuses children — where trust is violated, innocence is exploited, and harm is hidden behind a screen,” Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts said in the release. “Our office remains committed to standing up for the most vulnerable among us and ensuring that those who prey on children are held fully accountable.”

In a separate Ada County case, Patania has been charged with five felonies — two counts of sexual battery of a minor, injury to child, aggravated assault and use of a deadly weapon in commission of a felony — for which he has pleaded not guilty.

In a third Ada County case, Patania has been charged with one felony count of sexual abuse of a child under the age of 16, and one felony count of lewd conduct with a child under 16. His plea information for those charges was not available.”
