From Lincoln, Nebraska, guardian Angela Lowe, 46, is “accused of starving and abusing a 12-year-old boy to the point doctors did not expect him to survive appeared in Lancaster County Court on Friday.

Angela Lowe, 46, is charged with felony child abuse, first-degree assault and false imprisonment, according to court documents.

Court records show Lowe had been the boy’s full legal guardian and conservator since he was 6 years old and was responsible for his health, finances and education. Two additional adults assisted with the boy’s care, but investigators said Lowe was the primary caregiver.

According to the Lincoln Police Department, Lowe brought a 12-year-old boy in her care to a local emergency room on Jan. 12. A nurse reported suspected child neglect to police, saying the child was severely malnourished and too weak to lift himself or speak.

Police said the boy had a core body temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit and weighed 47 pounds. The average weight for a 12-year-old boy is about 90 pounds.

The child was airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, where he was diagnosed with septic shock and pneumonia. Police said additional symptoms and injuries led investigators to believe the boy had been neglected, starved and tortured for several months.

Doctors initially did not expect the boy to survive more than a few days. As of Thursday, he remained in critical but stable condition in the pediatric intensive care unit.

The child was placed into state custody on Jan. 19. Lowe is no longer his legal guardian and is prohibited from contacting him.

On Thursday, Lowe was arrested at her home and booked into the Lancaster County Jail. Her bond was set at 10 percent of $750,000. Court records state she is not allowed to have contact with anyone younger than 19.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 4.”
