India: Adoptee Gets 10 years of Rigorous Imprisonment For Killing his Adoptive Mother
“An adopted son who hacked his mother to death has been sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by a city court.
“This is a case fit for life sentence. The court, however, is inclined to show leniency considering the accused is a 21-year-old,” said Mahila court judge Meena Satheesh .
According to the prosecution, Poorasami and his wife Tripura Sundari, 40, of Korukkupet did not have a child. They adopted Suresh Kumar son of Sundari’s elder sister Jayalakshmi. The couple, however, did not legally register Kumar as their son. A few years later, they adopted another child, Karthik, and legalised the adoption. This infuriated Suresh Kumar, then 19, and he had several altercations with Sundari.
On June 4, 2012, when Sundari was alone at home, Kumar entered and attacked her with a sharp weapon. He went on to hack Sundari to death. The Korrukupet police arrested Kumar. On completion of trial, the court convicted Kumar. The court also slapped him with a fine of 10,000. ”
