How Could You? Hall of Shame-Patrick Michael Anderson

From Corona, California, 54-year-old Adoptive father, Patrick Michael Anderson, “has been accused of sexually abusing one of his two adopted sons.

The victim was accompanied by his older brother when he walked up to the front counter of the Corona police station and reported the alleged abuse on June 28.

“Neighbor Ray Tafoya says Anderson has lived in the area for a while. He, however, didn’t know much about the two boys who Anderson adopted in 2012.

“My kids know of his kids, and they say that they go to intermediate school,” Tafoya said.

Anderson was arrested later that day at Common Ground Corona, a spiritual community in Norco, on four felony charges, including oral copulation while the person is unconscious, sodomy, continuous sexual abuse of a child, and lewd acts with a child.

“There is no evidence at the time to support that Anderson used Common Ground Corona as a place to commit his alleged crimes,” the police department said in a press release.

The suspect has posted $1 million bail. He refused Eyewitness News’ request for comment Tuesday morning when we knocked at his door. He’s due in court on Sept. 3.

“As part of the investigation, police contacted leaders at Common Ground Corona, a spiritual community center Anderson belongs to and volunteers for. Police also searched the areas Anderson had access to, the news release said.

“There is no evidence at this time to support that Anderson used Common Ground Corona as a place to commit his alleged crimes,” Sgt. Paul Mercado said in the news release.

Both Mercado and Common Ground Rev. Danell Wheeler said Anderson is simply a member of the church and did not have any authority there. Wheeler also said Anderson did not interact with children at the church and mostly volunteered on construction projects.

The news of Anderson’s arrest took Common Ground Corona members by surprise, Wheeler said.

“We are absolutely stunned and devastated at these charges,” she said. “When anyone wants to volunteer here we run them through (the Megan’s Law website, which lists registered sex offenders). His record was absolutely clean. We had absolutely no reason to think that there was an issue.”

Anderson was arrested July 2 after detectives conducted a “consent search” at his home, police said in the news release.

He was booked into the county jail in Riverside on suspicion of committing sodomy by force, lewd or lascivious acts with a child younger than 14, continuous sexual abuse of a child and oral copulation while the victim was unconscious. He was released three days later on $1 million bail.

During the search of Anderson’s home, detectives seized items that are being searched to identify any other potential victims, the news release said.”
