Egyptian Orphanage Shut Down After Child Abuse Reports

“Egypt’s social solidarity ministry shut down an orphanage in Cairo’s Nasr City over reports of abuse against a number of girls, state news agency MENA reported.

On Friday, news outlets reported that a number of girls were beaten and others were burned by being forced to sit on hot metal.

In a statement on Saturday, the ministry said the closure of the orphanage was put into effect on Friday after investigations confirmed a number of violations committed in this orphanage.

“All girls were transferred to a nearby orphanage under the direct supervision of the ministry for their safety… and all the necessary procedures are being undertaken,” the statement added.

According to UNICEF’s 2016 State of the World’s Children report, 93 percent of Egyptian children are subjected to “violent discipline.” ”
