India Toughens Domestic Adoption Requirements

“A new adoption rule which is likely to come into effect soon says that single men will not be able to adopt a girl child at all. Not live-in couples won’t even have the option to do so.”

“According to the new laws, if you’re single, you can’t be younger than 30 years or older than 50 years to adopt a child.

But Leila Baig, a senior advisor with Coordinating Voluntary Adoption Resource Agency or CVARA says that there is a reason why such laws are in place and that the primary responsibility is towards the child and not the parent.  She says that girls have different needs that a single father would find difficult to fulfill.

She also says that there are bigger issues like the system’s inefficiency when it comes to adoption. “The government holds up the process at every stage. It takes almost 6 to 8 months to adopt a child legally,” she says.
