Forced Adoptions in Nigeria

The video at the following link describes the story of a pregnant 16-year-old who traveled to Calabar, Nigeria when she was afraid to tell her family about her pregnancy. She was taken in by a home for pregnant girls that was set up by the wife of the state’s governor. She claims that she was required to sign over the child with threat of being jailed.

A doctor from the hospital is interviewed as is the director of the home who denies the claim. The doctor states that children are taken direct from the hospital for adoption before the mother is released. The girl’s home is said to have “helped” 100 girls.

The 16-year-old was able to keep her child and was reunited with her mother.
