Horror Stories of Two Children Kidnapped for Adoption- Utah and Guatemala
We also could have entitled this post A Tale of Two Sets of Entitled Adoptive Parents too.
We first covered the Father’s right story of John Wyatt here. Dateline showcased John’s story on Friday August 19 (scroll for comments) here. More comments here (scroll) .
The story of the Guatemalan “adoptee” who Guatemala has asked to be returned due to kidnapping is covered here .
Utah: Child born in Virginia to Emily Fahland, a single Mormon mother. Biological dad John Wyatt knew of pregnancy, went to doctor’s appointments and showed up at the hospital for the birth with his own mother. He was shut out of the delivery room.Birthmother moved to a hotel room.
Guatemala: Child living with her biological family Loyda and Dayner Rodríguez. Anyeli was born January 14, 2005. She was kidnapped on November 3, 2006 from their home. The parents reported Anyelí’s kidnapping the same day. The couple had two other children together, and two-year-old Anyelí was their middle child and only daughter.
Shady Documentation Surrounding Adoption
Utah: Birtmother allegedly coerced into signing documents by her mother and adoption agency. Child taken to Utah.
Guatemala: Child allegedly taken to live with adoption facilitators (Bran family) until adopted to the US.
Child’s Rights Not Considered
Utah: Fahland relinquished her parental rights to her daughter on Feb. 12, 2009. Joshua Peterman, Wyatt’s attorney, argued a time-stamped receipt shows Wyatt filed visitation and custody petitions on Feb. 18 — five days before the Zarembinskis initiated an adoption proceeding in Utah. Wyatt also never received proper notice (Text message to Dad becomes the legal notification)
Guatemala: Child’s name allegedly changed thereby erasing history.
Government Authority Proceeds with Adoption with Unethical And/or Fradulent Papers
Utah: Adoption proceeds in Utah and finalized. Adoptive parents had filed documents five days after John filed for custody in Virginia on February 23, 2009. Dad files Utah papers April 28, 2009. Adoptive parents know within a few months of the birth that the biological dad is desperate to parent his child. (Virginia judge does order custody to biological father but to Utah refuses.) Now it is 2 years later.
Guatemala: Adoption proceeds in Guatemala, DNA doesn’t match but adoptive parents go through with it anyway going through a very long adoption process due to the mismatch. Extra step of US Embassy approving visa. (Biological mother searches orphanages for daughter to no avail.)Within 1 year of having the child in the US, lawsuit was filed by biological mother after looking through 1000 adoption records and finding her daughter’s file. Adoptive parents know that the biological parents are desperate to have the child back. Now it is 2 years post suit by organization Sobrevivientes.
Adoptive Parents Know there is Fraud Early On-Lawsuits Bring out the Truth-Court and Public Reactions Differ on Cases
Utah: Utah Supreme Court sides with adoptive parents. Lawsuit pending. Most of the general public reading this story are disgusted with Utah’s laws and the adoptive parents and are voicing that John should get custody.
Guatemala: Court demands return of Anyeli to Guatemala and gives 60 days from July 29, 2011 for the Monahans to do so. Not enough of the general public recognizes this as a kidnapping and still are empathizing with the adoptive parents who have known for YEARS that the child’s history was manufactured. They have hired a DC-based PR firm and are setting up a showdown with Interpol who may get involved if the Monahans do not return Anyeli .See Erin Siegal’s website for specifics on the case and this August 23, 2011 post about tracking of 2009 movements of the Monahans and head of CCI agency here.
