Wanted: Ethics for the People and the Process
People
You know that a hard look at ethics is needed when you examine any child welfare or adoption system and see that the needs of the child and adult adoptee are not the focus.
The rights of the child living in non-family care need to be examined.
Minor adoptees are in need of supports that are not always accessible or available.
Even adult adoptees have needs, from obtaining their original birth certificates to knowing their true histories.
Original families are not being offered enough family preservation opportunities and are being subjected to harvesting and harsh child protective service techniques.
Adoptive parents are not being offered enough support in parenting.
Legislative reform at the state, federal, and international levels is needed for agencies, government, and even parent actions in child welfare.
Most of all, enforcement of laws and regulations already on the books as well as corrective legislation for all current issues are critical for an ethical process to take place.
Before we start delving into some of the processes, we will begin by examining some of the people and start to define ethics.
